Has the US done a U-turn on Ukraine?

No. Combat continues along Ukrainian frontlines. Russia has agreed in principle to stop attacking energy infrastructure in order to avoid Minsk 3 freeze and a buffer zone. However, the US has demonstrated this pattern of false peace over and over again. It is not Putin who would ‘breach’ a treaty. It is the US.

All the conflicts are connected. Weaken Russia, bomb Yemen to weaken Iran, all to isolate China.

Russia has comprehensively destroyed the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk. It was a collapse and total rout. There is no Ukraine advantage in drones nor troops. The soldiers retreated at night and will contribute to the overall catastrophic collapse.

Any overture of peace is a ploy for a pause. Russia would never trade Kursk for anything. They were always going to take it back by force.

If Trump wanted to stop the war he could have cut Ukraine off at any time. He is choosing to continue to support it. Ukraine was armed, by Trump and others, ahead of time.

The US then overthrew the Ukrainian regime (one of many) in violation of the UN charter. Serbia, Georgia and unsuccessfully Belarus were also targeted. Any one who didn’t submit to US policy. Georgia was used as beligerent battering ram against Russia. The EU concluded that Georgia started the war with Russia. Bush also planned to deploy banned weapons to Europe.

This was a freeze allowing the US to regroup and buy time while they built up the Ukraine armed forces. Merkel admitted Minsk was able to buy time for Kiev during an impasse.

Trump unilaterally withdraws from ‘unacceptable’ deals eg the one in 2018 with Iran. Undermining the credibility of these nations. 2019 Trump pulled out of INF with no evidence and announced they were developing weapons to deploy to the EU. He enthusiastically approved the sale of javelin weapons to Ukraine. The last of the red lines for Russia.

Ukraine could easily turn into a larger Georgia. Russia had to act with the SMO.

Hegseth announced the plan in Feb 2025 in Brussels:

• Robust guarantees required by EU and non-EU, not US troops. Non Article 5.

• Trump unleashed energy production, lower energy prices and sanctions on Russia.

• EU must provide the larger share of support to Ukraine.

• The US is prioritising war with China.

Europe then did all of these things. Von der Leyden 800 billion euros to ‘step up’. Macron ‘boost defence spending’. UK’s John Healey ‘challenged Europe to step up on spending and security- we have, we are and will further.’ Publicly acknowledging they’re good little boys. Everyone knows they can’t defeat Russia. That was never the point.

Starmer ‘Putin will have to come to the table.’ Now is time to engage and agree to lasting peace back by coalition of the willing. Keep pushing forward. Weaken war machine and bring Putin to table. So called peace maker Tulsi Gabbard is openly backing the Yemen war and is calling for other nations to join in. Trump has no desire whatsoever to put peace over primacy.
