Jo, if you don't want me to comment anymore about this subject with you, I'll stop. I so enjoy your Substack and don't want to get into a pissing match over the ONE issue we disagree on. But......Despite your post being incredibly thought provoking and factually almost unassailable, I will still say this. IMO we can, as a species continue to eat animal flesh AND seafood and be good stewards of the earth. Here's the bottom line for me. Every day, I do damage to the planet. I have a car and so does my wife. But we bought e-bikes last year and charge the batteries with solar. I use it to go to the grocery store and run errands. I only drive about 2-3K per year in my car. My wife less since she works from home. So, although we still do damage to the earth every time we drive, sometimes it's a cost benefit issue. I need to use my car to better my life despite its negative impact. I see animal consumption the same way. This only works for ME bc I do believe that eating some animal protein is beneficial for my health. We could argue that point until the cows come home (-: and not agree. But that's for another debate. As always, I respect your positions and admire your work. Thanks.

For me all the talk of carbon is the equivalent of antibody measures during the pandemic emergency.. they are things that modelers can extrapolate from endlessly and debate but they are distractions that ignore the largest problems & solutions benefit corp profiteers who promote them w Bill Gates as poster boy for both.

Anyone serious about reducing environmental harms needs to begin with curbs on toxic activity from the top down. Washington's war machine and petrochemical empire it protects are top of the heap.. destroying Nord Stream pipeline alone was worse than cow farts to the end of time.. Monsanto/Bayer/Syngenta et al clear cutting the Amazon for gmo soy can stop before pasture raised herds get a glance..

Abandoned military bases with rotting steel drums of lethal agents & toxic waste accumulated since WWII and seeping into soils and groundwater can be remediated along with all the Superfund sites that struggle for funding because the tab went from polluters to taxpayers in 1995 under Clinton.

If we stick with cattle let's first shut down the CAFO operations and vast sludge pollution then when all the corporate exploiters, looters & polluters get their activity cleaned up we revisit rules for small producers of anything. Take a peek at what the CAFO waste looked like the last time EPA updated records in 2001.. Dubbya ended all toxic data collection so Christie Whitman as EPA Director could lie about safe air at Ground Zero.. always working to keep us safe!

Once the CAFO operations are shuttered we can debate carbon all day long! <3

Almost two trillion pounds of animal waste are produced per year nationally. An increasing amount of this animal waste is produced by intensive livestock operations, which are really more factories than farms. Common animal waste treatment practices used by these livestock factories are often inadequate to protect our drinking water and environment, posing one of America's serious pollution problems. https://web.archive.org/web/20120212233950/http://scorecard.goodguide.com/env-releases/aw/
