Dear Jo,

I'm sure you're familiar with Plato's 'cave analogy' which essentially points out that we, as humans, have a blinkered or restricted point of view. As I delve into your sorts of themes, I'm often reminded of the analogy which, in normal life, doesn't really make sense. In normal life, we tend to talk with people who either agree with us, or at least agree on the terms of the debate. More and more, all of this is falling apart.

Polio, I think, is the best example of what I'm trying to express. I, along with 99.9% of the world, was happy to say: virus -> paralysis; vaccine -> cure. But I was blissfully ignorant of the fact that 'public health' would literally spray children with vast mists of DDT. I kill a few mosquitos with Raid, and I'm coughing the rest of the night!!!

As you unveil certain aspects of medicine, I find myself more and more bewildered. In this example, prions, I'm astonished that there are no scientists who said: well, okay, sure the cows are getting sick, but we treat them horribly and poison them. Then: since we have no ethics, we might as well take a few dozen and poison them a bit more/less and treat them slightly better/worse... and see what happens.

Or, with polio: spray a bunch of hamsters with DDT and see what happens.

The West, where I grew up, is an increasingly strange beast. I'm living now in one of the poorest non-African 3rd world countries and... everybody is insanely healthy! They might die a little bit younger, but life expectancy is a poor judge of *health* (and a good judge of sanitation).

I suppose this message is somewhat inessential. But having been in the academy, I'm increasingly distressed with what it's turned out to be.

Thanks! This was an eye opener for me. "Prions" always confused me.

How strange to call prion infectious, I thought it was just a "misfolded" protein?

By the way, I really appreciate you keeping this perspective on my radar. It really helps me see more clearly. 🙏💕
