Personally, I'd rather live in poverty than have my behavior and free speech controlled by a government social credit score that determines if I'll be allowed to eat, work, rent an apartment and generally participate in society. I'd rather not be locked in my home to starve during lockdowns. Modern day China is the very picture of what suffering looks like to me. Improved quality of life is obviously a subjective thing if loss of personal freedom is preferable.

I'm pretty the locking in homes is propaganda and the Chinese would not see being lifted out of starvation as a loss of freedom. We are the ones fooled into thinking we live in a free democracy.

During the Great Leap Forward in the late '50s and early '60s, the population was intentionally starved under Mao Tse Tung - a common tactic of communist regimes to weaken populations and make them compliant. Private farm land was taken over by the government - another common tactic, causing the starvation. (Before that, people grew their own food successfully, as the population numbers make obvious.)
The powers that shouldn't be decided China would gradually take over manufacturing and most production from the west, which has occurred, weakening our economies in the west and effectively handing China a middle class while we lost ours.
Whether you believe industry and the financiers are "the cabal" that controls events or that there's a higher order above them, either way, it's not democracy and free enterprise that determines our fate. So that much we agree on.
The people in China may be more prosperous in the way of goods and services than they once were, but if you believe living in a communist country is true prosperity, please talk to people who've left them.
